Adults can be poisoned by taking 5 to 10 mg, and 30 mg can be fatal. It has been reported that the total dose of 50.54 mg of Strychnos nux vomica in the treatment of diphtheria caused poisoning. There have also been cases of poisoning caused by taking Jiuzhuan Huisheng Dan (the main ingredients of which are strychnine and earthworm) or death caused by poisoning from taking only seven strychnine seeds.
