Li Shizhen also pointed out in Compendium of Materia Medica: "In the past there was Eucommia ulmoides, who attained enlightenment by taking this herb, and was named after it." Modern scientific research has even found that Eucommia ulmoides also has a bidirectional regulatory effect on the treatment of blood pressure diseases. Eucommia ulmoides preparations can prevent osteoporosis in space and have anti-aging effects. If you break the bark, branches or leaves of Eucommia ulmoides, you will see silk threads sticking together, just like the broken lotus root but still connected by silk threads, so it is also called "pulled silky skin" by the folks. Those sticky silk threads are the rubber threads of Eucommia ulmoides, which are now used as raw materials for submarine cables. The wood of Eucommia ulmoides is white, shiny, fine-grained, and not easily eaten by insects. It can be processed into vehicles, ships, buildings, farm tools, etc. Because the whole tree has practical value, some people call Eucommia ulmoides "plant gold". 【Nature and flavor and meridians】 Sweet, warm. It enters the liver and kidney meridians. 【Function and indications】 Nourishes the liver and kidneys, strengthens the tendons and bones, regulates the Chong and Ren meridians, consolidates menstruation and stabilizes pregnancy. Applicable to: kidney deficiency, low back pain, foot weakness and fatigue, etc. Kidney deficiency and essence deficiency, as well as weak Chong and Ren meridians, lead to fetal movement disorder. 【Literature Discussion】 According to the Ben Jing, Eucommia ulmoides “treats back pain, replenishes the middle and strengthens the essence, strengthens the tendons and bones, strengthens the will, and eliminates dampness and itching under the genitals and residual urine.” "Ming Yi Bie Lu" (Famous Doctors' Records): "It is used to treat sore feet and the feeling of not wanting to step on the ground." "Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "It is sweet and warm, nourishing, slightly spicy and moistening. Its purple color enters the liver meridian and qi, moisturizes the dry liver, and replenishes the liver deficiency. The son can make the mother full, so it can also nourish the kidney." "Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "If the lower part of the body is weak, Eucommia can only be used to replenish it; if the lower part of the body is damp, Eucommia can only be used to relieve it; if the feet and shins are sore, Eucommia can only be used to relieve it; if the waist and knees are painful, Eucommia can only be used to relieve it. However, it is purple and dry, and its texture is soft and tough. It warms the body and replenishes it. It can nourish the liver and kidneys. It is truly an essential medicine." "Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "People with coldness in the kidney meridian can use this warming tonic to strengthen the fetus." 【Modern Pharmacology】 Eucommia contains eucommia gum, glycosides, bioalkali, pectin, fat, resin, organic acid, aldose, chlorogenic acid, β-sitosterol, etc. 1. Antihypertensive effect: 100% raw Eucommia ulmoides, stir-fried Eucommia ulmoides and scalded Eucommia ulmoides decoctions were administered to rabbits and dogs via the jugular vein at a dose of 1 ml/kg. The results showed that the three decoctions of Eucommia ulmoides had obvious antihypertensive effects on rabbits and dogs, but the antihypertensive effect of raw Eucommia ulmoides was weaker. The effects of fried Eucommia ulmoides and blanched Eucommia ulmoides were almost the same, and their absolute blood pressure lowering values were equivalent to twice that of raw Eucommia ulmoides. Some studies believe that Eucommia ulmoides has a "bidirectional regulation" function on blood pressure, that is, it can lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension and increase blood pressure in patients with hypotension. 2. Strengthening effect: Animal experiments have shown that the bark and leaves of Eucommia ulmoides contain a special ingredient that can promote the synthesis and decomposition of protein in human skin, bones, and muscles, and has the function of promoting metabolism and preventing decline. 【Clinical Application】 1. Hypertension: Preparations made from Eucommia leaves and bark were used to treat hypertension, and a comparative observation was conducted on a total of 251 patients. The total effective rate was 85% in the Eucommia leaf group and 76.9% in the Eucommia bark group. However, in terms of improving the main symptoms of patients with hypertension, the Eucommia leaf group was better than the Eucommia bark group. You can also make Eucommia ulmoides into a 10% tincture, take 50 drops each time, 3 times a day. 119 cases of hypertension were treated with an effective rate of 42.8%. 2. Systemic lupus erythematosus: For a patient with lupus erythematosus of spleen-kidney yang deficiency type, Eucommia ulmoides, Leonurus japonicus 18g each, Clematidis, Epimedium, Chuanduan, Cuscuta australis 15g each, Aconitum 6g, Cinnamon bark 3g, Imperatae cylindrica 30g were administered, decocted in water once a day. The dosage was increased or decreased according to symptoms in a total of 21 cases. The erythema subsided, and all laboratory tests were normal. There was no recurrence during more than 1 year of follow-up. 3. Based on a large number of clinical observations, the antihypertensive effect of Eucommia ulmoides alone is not ideal and is not suitable as a specific drug for the treatment of hypertension. It should be used in combination with other Chinese herbal medicines with antihypertensive effects, such as Scutellaria baicalensis, Achyranthes bidentata, Prunella vulgaris, and Viscum album. The role of Eucommia ulmoides is mainly to correct kidney yang deficiency and adjust the body's yin and yang balance. 【Usage and Dosage】 10~15g, decocted in water. It can also be made into pills and powders. 【Notes】 Eucommia ulmoides is warm in nature and can strengthen yang, so it is a warm tonic. Therefore, people with yin deficiency, hyperactivity of fire, and fever in the five hearts should not take it. |
