The efficacy and function of verbena

Verbena is a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine in my country. It is a perennial herb native to Europe and is widely distributed and planted in East China, South China and Southwest my country. The effects and functions of verbena include: it has the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and can be used to treat gynecological diseases such as dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea.

The effects of verbena also include detoxification, reducing swelling and promoting diuresis. It has a certain antitussive effect on coughs caused by various reasons. In ancient China, it was often used to treat cold and heat symptoms caused by malaria.

Both water and alcohol extracts have anti-inflammatory effects on inflammation caused by mustard oil instilled into the conjunctival sac of rabbits, and the latter has a better anti-inflammatory effect than the former. The water-soluble part of the latter is better than the water-insoluble part. The water extract has an analgesic effect on the pain caused by electrical stimulation of the rabbit dental pulp, which starts 1 hour after administration and disappears 3 hours later; the analgesic effect of the alcohol extract completely disappears after 6 hours, and the water-soluble part has a greater effect, while the water-insoluble part has no analgesic effect.

When the concentration of verbena is 1.6×10-2g/ml, it has a certain stimulating effect on the uterine muscle strips of rats and non-pregnant humans. In the uterine muscle strips of rats, the specimens in the estrus period were most sensitive to verbena, and the addition of verbena often caused an increase in both tension and contraction amplitude; while the specimens in other periods often only showed an increase in contraction amplitude. The human uterine muscle strips react weakly to verbena, and generally only the tension changes. In the rat uterine muscle strip experiment, verbena and PGE2 had a mutually reinforcing effect, but only an additive effect with PGF2a. When verbena is at a concentration sufficient to excite uterine smooth muscle, it has no significant effect on jejunal smooth muscle, nor can it enhance the effect of PGE2 on jejunal smooth muscle.

There are many other effects and functions of verbena. For example, use 10 kilograms of verbena and sage, add water, boil and remove the residue, make it into pills, take two to three pills a day, it can treat abdominal bloating and abdominal pain. Verbena can also treat bloating and thirst. In addition, verbena can also stimulate the sympathetic nerves and promote milk secretion.
