Source: This product is the dried aerial parts of the Berberidaceae plants Epimedium brevicornum Maxim., Epimedium sagittatum (Sieb. Et Zucc.) Maxim., Epimedium pubescens Maxim., Epimedium wushanense TS Ying, or Epimedium koreaum Nakai.

Origin: Epimedium: grows under bamboo forests in the mountains and in cracks in rocks beside mountain roads. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Sichuan and Zhejiang.

Medicinal material properties: Epimedium macrophyllum: The stem is thin and cylindrical, about 20cm long, with a yellow-green or light yellow surface and is shiny. The stem leaves are opposite, twice-ternate compound leaves; the leaflets are ovate, 3 to 8 cm long and 2 to 6 cm wide; the tip is slightly pointed, the base of the terminal leaflet is cordate, the leaflets on both sides are smaller and eccentric, the outer side is larger, ear-shaped, and the edges have yellow thorn-like fine serrations; the upper surface is yellow-green, the lower surface is gray-green, there are 7 to 9 main veins, the base has sparse and long hairs, the fine veins are protruding on both sides, and the reticular veins are obvious; the petiole is 1 to 5 cm long. Leaves nearly leathery. Odorless, slightly bitter taste.

Sagittate Epimedium: It is a three-leaved compound leaf with oblong leaflets, 4-12 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, with extremely pointed or gradually pointed tips, the outer sides of the base of the leaflets on both sides are arrow-shaped, and the leaves are leathery.

Epimedium small leaf: The leaflets are larger, 4-10 cm long, 3.5-7 cm wide, with a long pointed tip and thin leaves.

Harvesting and processing: Harvest when the stems and leaves are lush in summer and autumn, remove thick stems and impurities, and dry in the sun or shade. Cut into strips and used raw or roasted with mutton fat (refined oil).

Efficacy: Nourishes kidney yang, strengthens tendons and bones, and eliminates rheumatism.

Application: used for impotence and spermatorrhea, weakness of muscles and bones, rheumatism, numbness and cramps; menopausal hypertension.

Usage and dosage: decoction, 5-10g. It can also be soaked in wine, boiled into a paste, or made into pills or powders.
