Friends who have studied botany know that there are many types of palm plants, the most common of which are fan palms and palm trees. They play a key role in landscaping and make our city more beautiful. But they also have some similarities, especially in appearance, they seem to be similar. So, what is the difference between a palm tree and a lily palm? 1. Distinguish by body size The palm tree is only about ten meters tall. It is very common to see fan palm trees grow to a height of twenty meters, and they have larger leaves, thicker stems, and grow faster. 2. Differentiate from the appearance The petioles of palm trees have only many small, blunt spines distributed continuously, while the petioles of fan palms have sharp, separate spines. Palm leaves are not only small, but also have deep fissures. Under normal circumstances (not damaged by external forces), the ends of the fissures do not droop but remain straight. Livistona leaves are larger, and their fissures are shallow (therefore, the cattail leaves fans we often use are generally made from cattail leaves. Palm leaves are not only small in yield and deep in fissures, but are also not suitable for making fans), and the tips of the fissures droop naturally. Moreover, the fibers on the stems of the palm tree are less than those on the palm tree, and are easy to fall off, exposing the trunk; the fibers on the stems of the palm tree are thicker and denser, and are not easy to fall off, which is an adaptation to the cold environment. 3. Differentiation from distribution differences Palm trees can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C and are grown from southern Shaanxi and the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River in the north to southern China and Vietnam in the south. However, the palm tree has poor cold resistance and is only found in certain areas of South China and Southwest China (south of the Qinling Mountains, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, southern Yunnan, southern Fujian, southern Jiangxi, etc.). 4. Differentiate from the fruit 1. Livistona fruit: The fruit is oval, green in surface when fresh, soft and juicy, slightly pointed at both ends and shaped like an olive, about 2 cm long and 1 cm in diameter, with a round and thick stalk at one end. Green peel, white endosperm and embryo can be seen in the longitudinal section. When the fruit is ripe, it turns from light yellow to dark brown, with longitudinal textures and sporadic khaki spots on the surface. The seed coat of the seeds without the pericarp is brown, membranous, with pits on the ventral side, hard and not easy to break, and the endosperm in cross section is white, horny and oily. 2. Palm fruit: The fruit is broadly kidney-shaped, with the stalk on the side, one side raised and the other side concave, 8-10 mm long and 5-8 mm wide. The surface is green-yellow or gray-yellow when fresh, turning to gray-blue when ripe, with white wax powder, and dark brown with irregular reticular longitudinal texture after drying. The exocarp and mesocarp are thin and often fall off, revealing the brown-black hard endocarp. The kernel is white, horny, and oily in longitudinal section, and the concave chalazion on the ventral side is enlarged inward and reddish-brown, with a yellow-white embryo in the middle of the raised back. |
