【II】Morphological characteristics

Erect perennial herb, 0.5-1 m tall, much branched, sometimes with creeping roots at the base. The stem is quadrangular, grooved, and covered with flat, stiff hairs and glandular hairs. The leaves are ovate, 2-5 cm long and 1.5-3.2 cm wide, obtuse or acute at apex, broadly cuneate to almost rounded at base, with sparsely crenate teeth on margin, olive green above and slightly paler below, covered with rough stiff hairs on both sides, especially on the lower veins, with about 5 pairs of lateral veins, slightly sunken above and distinctly raised below, like the midrib. The cymes are many-flowered, spherical and recumbent, with a diameter of up to 2 cm when flowering, forming broad and multi-headed panicles along the stems and branches; the bracts are leaf-like, smaller, and those born near the top of the stems and branches are degenerated into bracts; the bracts are needle-shaped, 3-5 mm long, and covered with nodal long soft hairs and glandular soft hairs; the pedicels are 2-5 mm long and densely covered with glandular soft hairs. The calyx is cylindrical, about 6 mm long and 1 mm wide when flowering, with 13 veins, covered with nodal long soft hairs and glandular fine hairs on the veins, with sparse bristles in the throat of the calyx, and one side of the base is swollen when fruiting, up to 2 mm wide, the upper lip has 3 teeth, the teeth are triangular and have a tail tip, the lower lip has 2 teeth, and the tip is awn. The corolla is purple-red, about 8 mm long. The corolla tube extends from the calyx and is slightly pubescent on the outside. The corolla rim is bilabiate, with the upper lip straight and slightly punctate at the apex, and the lower lip 3-lobed. The stamens are not exposed, the posterior stamens are short and the anthers are small, under the dome of the upper lip, straight, the anterior stamens are longer than the lower lip, and the anthers are normal. The flower disk is flat-topped. Ovary glabrous. The nutlets are oval, about 1 mm long, brown and smooth. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is September.
