【Source】This product is the Cupressaceae plant Platycladus

orientalis (L.)Franco dried branches and leaves. It is mostly harvested in summer and autumn and dried in the shade.

[Properties] This product has many branches and the twigs are flat. The leaves are small, scaly, arranged alternately and attached to the branches, and are dark green or yellow-green. It is brittle and easily broken. It has a light fragrance and tastes bitter and slightly spicy.

【Identification】The powder of this product is yellow-green. The upper epidermal cells are rectangular with slightly thick walls. The lower epidermal cells are square-shaped; there are many stomata, which are sunken; the guard cells are relatively large and dumbbell-shaped when viewed from the side. The parenchyma cells contain oil droplets. The fibers are long and slender, with a diameter of about 18 μm. Tracheids with marginated pits are sometimes visible.

Cools blood and stops bleeding; relieves cough and eliminates phlegm; eliminates rheumatism; disperses swelling and toxins. It is mainly used to treat hemoptysis, hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, bloody dysentery, intestinal bleeding, metrorrhagia, cough with sputum, rheumatic arthralgia, erysipelas, mumps, and burns. It is used for vomiting blood, epistaxis, hemoptysis, blood in the stool, metrorrhagia, hair loss due to blood heat, and premature graying of hair.

"Bielu": It is used to treat vomiting blood, epistaxis, bloody dysentery, and metrorrhagia with red or white discharge. It lightens the body and replenishes qi, makes one resistant to cold and heat, removes dampness and arthritis, and promotes the growth of new tissues.

"Materia Medica": It can stop hematuria and treat pain in joints caused by cold wind.

"Bencao Gangmu": roast and smell it to treat frostbite.

"Compendium of Materia Medica": Kills insects in the five internal organs.

①Treatment of vomiting blood: 3 liang of cypress leaves and dried ginger, 3 handfuls of moxa. Take the above three ingredients, add five liters of water and one liter of Ma Tong juice, boil them together, take out one liter, divide into portions and drink while warm. Treat vomiting blood due to worry and anger, restlessness and shortness of breath, and chest pain: Grind cypress leaves into powder and take 2 qian of it with porridge at any time. (Sheng Hui Fang)

③Treat nosebleed of several liters and unconsciousness: pomegranate flowers and cypress leaves in equal parts. Grind into powder and blow into nose. (Puji Fang)

④Treat hematuria: cypress leaves, coptis root (roasted and ground). Take three grams with wine. ("Emergency Prescription")

Treat dysentery with black blood in the abdomen, the color of tea pods, or pus and blood like indigo: cypress leaves (roasted and ground into powder), coptis root. Boil the two ingredients together into juice and drink it. (Compendium of Materia Medica)

⑥To treat dysentery in children: boil cypress leaves into juice and drink it instead of tea. (Experienced Prescription)

⑦For the treatment of hemorrhoids, intestinal wind, internal toxins, and persistent bleeding: burn cypress leaves and mix them into ashes for oral administration. (《One Hundred and One Prescriptions》)

⑧For treating intestinal wind, visceral poison, dysentery due to alcohol, and persistent bleeding: 2 liang of young cypress leaves (steamed and dried nine times), 1 liang of old locust flowers (fried until half black). Grind the above ingredients into powder, and make pills with refined honey, the size of sycamore seeds. Take 40 to 50 pills each time, on an empty stomach with warm wine. ⑨To treat women with prolonged menstruation: one liang each of peony and cypress leaves (roasted). Coarsely pound and sieve the above two ingredients. Take three spoonfuls each time, add half a cup of water and half a cup of wine, boil until seven parts are left, remove the residue and drink while warm. (Peony Decoction from Shengji Zonglu)

Treats rheumatoid arthritis, pain as if bitten by a tiger, spreading throughout the body, unable to move, extreme pain when moving, restless day and night: 5 qian of Platycladus orientalis leaves, 2 qian each of Akebia, Chinese Angelica, Safflower, Notopterygium wilfordii, and Saposhnikovia divaricata.
