Morphological characteristics

1. Palmate scorpion grass: perennial upright herb, about 1 cm tall, with branches sparsely covered with rough hairs and sharp thorn-like chelicerae. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate to oblate, 8-15cm long, with a rounded, truncated or cordate base, unlobed or 3-5-lobed at the apex, with nearly triangular lobes and coarse serrations on the edges. Both sides are covered with translucent long hard hairs, sometimes with light yellow coarse hairs. It blooms from June to November, with axillary spikes. The male inflorescence is shorter than the female inflorescence, the flowers are almost sessile, small and have coarse stiff hairs. Achenes are gray-brown, oblate, and the style is persistent. The seeds are flat, with a concave abdomen and a slightly raised back, and are yellow.

2. Hubei red hemp: perennial herb, 70-130cm tall, the whole plant has gray-white stinging hairs, which are extremely painful when in contact with the skin. The stems are clustered and upright, nearly square columnar, angular, and purple-red in color. The leaves are opposite, long-petiolate, and have 2 stipules at the base. Stipules are free, lanceolate, 3-9mm long; leaves are papery, cordate or ovate-cordate, 5-10cm long, with a pointed apex, cordate base, and coarsely serrated edges. The flowers are unisexual, on the same or different plants, with narrow spike-shaped inflorescences, 4-15 cm long, 2-3 axillary; male flowers are at the bottom, 1.5-2 mm long, with 4 tepals, green, and 4 stamens; female flowers are at the top of the inflorescence, and female flowers are slightly smaller than male flowers. Achenes are flat oval.
