Codonopsis has certain effects on the body. For example, it can affect blood, nerve centers, etc., and also has the effect of lowering blood pressure.

1. Effect on the central nervous system

Codonopsis pilosula decoction can counteract strychnine nitrate-induced convulsions in mice, prolong the time of convulsions, prolong the survival time of mice, and also has an anti-electrical convulsive effect. Codonopsis pilosula decoction can significantly counteract the memory acquisition disorder in mice caused by scopolamine; it also has an antagonistic effect on the memory retrieval disorder in mice caused by ethanol.

2. Effects on cardiovascular system

Both alcohol extract and water extract have antihypertensive effect, which is due to peripheral vasodilation. Ethanol extract has an inhibitory effect on isolated toad heart.

3. Effects on blood

Oral administration of water-soluble substance of Codonopsis pilosula has an inhibitory effect on ADP-induced platelet aggregation in rats. Commercial Codonopsis pilosula can significantly increase the red blood cells and significantly reduce the white blood cells of rabbits.

4. Anti-ulcer effect

Codonopsis has the effect of resisting gastric mucosal damage and enhancing the protection of gastric mucosal cells. [Anti-ulcer effect: Intragastric administration of n-butanol neutral extract of Codonopsis pilosula has a preventive and protective effect on stress-induced, pyloric ligation-induced, indomethacin-induced and aspirin-induced gastric ulcers in rats. It has a significant antagonistic effect on the decrease in prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and hexosamine levels in the gastric mucosa of rats caused by indomethacin and aspirin, and has an inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion. Intragastric administration of Codonopsis pilosula extract can significantly increase the content of PGE2 in the tissues of normal rats, and reduce the contents of prostaglandins (PGI2) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) to a certain extent, with TXA2 reducing significantly and the PGI2/TXA2 ratio increasing. It is believed that Codonopsis pilosula's ability to resist gastric mucosal damage is related to its enhanced protective effect on gastric mucosal cells. 〕
