In the outpatient clinic, we often encounter patients who come to see a doctor because of unbearable skin itching. Sometimes because of the itching, the patients will scratch their skin. In severe cases, the skin will be damaged and infected. To address this phenomenon, I often add a Chinese medicine with good antipruritic effect - Kochia scoparia - into the Chinese medicine prescription, and the effect is often good! Speaking of Kochia scoparia, we have to mention the source of this herb - the broom seedlings commonly seen in rural areas, which I believe everyone is familiar with. It is the seeds of this common plant that play an irreplaceable role in our traditional Chinese medicine in relieving itching. Kochia scoparia seeds taste pungent and bitter, are cold in nature, and enter the kidney and bladder meridians. They have the effects of clearing away heat and dampness, dispelling wind and relieving itching, and promoting diuresis and relieving stranguria. In clinical practice, the application of Kochia scoparia can involve many fields such as dermatology, gynecology, and urology. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on syndrome differentiation and treatment. No matter what disease it is, as long as it is diagnosed as an itchy disease of damp-heat syndrome, it can be used. For example, common eczema in dermatology is caused by damp-heat accumulation in the skin, with symptoms such as itching, or even ulceration and discharge. You can take 9-15g of Kochia scoparia seeds as a decoction to relieve dampness and itching. Common gynecological leucorrhea diseases, such as excessive leucorrhea, vulva itching, whether yellow discharge caused by damp heat or leucorrhea caused by cold and dampness, can be treated with Kochia scoparia. If the condition is mild, the Kochia scoparia can be taken orally as a decoction. If the itching is severe, in addition to taking it internally, 30g of Kochia scoparia can be used for external washing. At the same time, it can be combined with Sophora flavescens, Gentiana scabra, Phellodendron chinense, Atractylodes macrocephala, etc., and the effect is good. "Shennong's Herbal Classic" praises Kochia scoparia: "It can treat bladder heat and promote urination." Therefore, this product is often used to treat urinary tract infections, such as frequent urination, urgency, pain, or difficulty urinating, and is often used. Kochia scoparia can be taken orally or decocted for external use. The commonly used dosage is 9-15g, and about 30g is used for external use. Pay attention to syndrome differentiation in clinical practice, which often achieves excellent results. |
