In traditional Chinese medicine, there is a herb that strengthens yang and nourishes the kidneys, known as the "Viagra" of traditional Chinese medicine. Its name is - Epimedium.

According to legend, the origin of this name and its use as medicine have quite an unusual story.

According to historical records, Tao Hongjing, a famous medical scientist during the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, was a diligent man with a persistent pursuit of traditional Chinese medicine.

One day, while collecting herbs, I suddenly heard an old shepherd say to someone beside me: There is a strange grass growing in the bushes in the woods. It has green leaves that look like apricot leaves. Each grass has several stems and is one or two feet tall. After the ram has eaten, its penis becomes erect very easily, the number of matings with the ewe increases significantly, and the penis remains erect for a long time.

Who knows that the speaker is unintentional, but the listener is intentional. Tao Hongjing thought to himself: This might very well be a kidney-tonifying medicine that has yet to be discovered. So, he did not hesitate to ask questions and humbly consulted the shepherd. After repeated verification, he confirmed that the wild grass had an extraordinary aphrodisiac effect.

Later, this medicine was included in the pharmacopoeia and was named "Epimedium".

Epimedium is the stems and leaves of the perennial herbs Epimedium, Epimedium cordifolium or Epimedium sagittatum of the Berberidaceae family. It is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Shanxi, Liaoning, Hubei, Sichuan, Guangxi and other places.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Epimedium is pungent, sweet and warm in nature, and has the effects of nourishing the kidney and strengthening yang, dispelling wind and dampness. "Bencao Gangmu" says that it can "cure all cold wind and fatigue, nourish the waist and knees, strengthen the heart" and "spasm of muscles and bones, weakness of limbs, dizziness in the elderly, and forgetfulness in the middle-aged."

Modern pharmacological research shows that the stems and leaves of Epimedium contain icariin and volatile oil. It has been confirmed that epimedium has androgen-like effects, which are stronger than those of gecko and seahorse. Clinically, it promotes semen secretion, filling the seminal vesicles with semen, which in turn stimulates the sensory nerves, thereby stimulating sexual desire and causing penile erection. At the same time, epimedium can also inhibit the vasomotor center, dilate peripheral blood vessels, lower blood pressure, and can relieve cough, expectorant, and asthma. It also has a significant inhibitory effect on polio virus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus aureus, etc.

When talking about Epimedium, we have to mention a particularly famous prescription - Erxian Decoction.

This prescription consists of a total of 6 Chinese medicinal herbs: Curculigo, Epimedium, Morinda officinalis, Phellodendron chinense, Anemarrhena asphodeloides, and Angelica sinensis. The key medicines in the prescription are the "two immortals", namely Curculigo and Epimedium, which shows the importance of Epimedium.

The prescription uses Curculigo, Epimedium, and Morinda officinalis to warm and nourish the kidney yang, Anemarrhena asphodeloides and Phellodendron chinense to nourish yin and purge fire, and Angelica sinensis to nourish yin and replenish blood. The principles of yin and yang are contained in it. These simple six herbs can treat menopausal symptoms such as hot sweats, dizziness, palpitations, alternating hot and cold symptoms, etc. If the syndrome differentiation is accurate, the effect will be immediate.

"Erxian Soup" is an empirical recipe from Shanghai. It turns out that Erxian Decoction is used to treat hypertension, because a part of hypertension is caused by endocrine disorders. This endocrine disorder affects not only women but men as well, both men and women, but it is more common in women. Therefore, the Shanghai Institute of Hypertension invented Erxian Decoction.

It is now widely used in clinical practice and has a good therapeutic effect on diseases caused by endocrine disorders, suitable for both men and women.

In my clinical practice, I often add or subtract ingredients from Erxian Decoction to treat various endocrine disorders in menopausal women. For example, if someone is irritable and easily angered, I often add bupleurum and angelica to nourish the liver blood and soothe the liver qi. For those suffering from insomnia, frequent dreams and palpitations, add raw dragon bone, soanjujube seeds and other heart-nourishing and calming products.

Sometimes, epimedium is often found in prescriptions for treating blood diseases, such as thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, etc. It is used to increase the level of male hormones to improve immunity and promote platelet production.

However, it should be noted that people with symptoms such as dry mouth, hot palms and soles, hot flashes, and night sweats, which are classified as those with Yin deficiency and active fire in traditional Chinese medicine, should not take Epimedium. Instead, they should take Yin-nourishing and fire-clearing products such as Phellodendron chinense and Anemarrhena asphodeloides.
