It has the effects of clearing away heat and detoxifying, promoting blood circulation and reducing swelling, and promoting diuresis and resolving phlegm.

Solanum nigrum is suitable for treating many tumors, such as gastric cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, and cancerous pleural effusion and ascites. Solanum nigrum is combined with Hedyotis diffusa and Shuyangquan to form Longsheyangquan Decoction, which is a folk prescription in Shanghai and a basic prescription for preventing and treating various malignant tumors.

Solanum nigrum is also used together with Scutellaria baicalensis, Dioscorea bulbifera, and Aconitum carmichaelii to treat gastric cancer, etc. According to research, Solanum nigrum whole herb decoction (9-15g of dry product and 30-60g of fresh product per day) can treat cervical cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, etc., and has the effect of alleviating the progression of the disease.

The whole plant of Solanum nigrum contains various alkaloids such as total solanum nigrum alkaloids, solanine, saponins and vitamins A and C. The total alkaloids of Solanum nigrum extracted from the dried fruits of Solanum nigrum have a strong inhibitory rate on animal tumors. The components isolated from total alkaloids of Solanum nigrum have strong anti-cancer activity and obvious cytotoxic effects. In addition, Solanum nigrum also has anti-inflammatory, diuretic and expectorant effects.
