The persistent calyx is swollen into a lantern shape, often flattened, 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, yellowish white, papery, with 5 edges and reticular veins, and contains a spherical berry with a diameter of 1.2 cm. No smell, bitter taste. The best ones are those with many leaves, yellow-green color, and many fruit calyxes. Nature, flavor and function: bitter, slightly cold. It enters the lung meridian. Clears away heat, detoxifies, promotes diuresis and removes dampness. Used for fever due to eczema, cold, mumps, sore throat, cough, orchitis, and bullous sore. The usual dosage is 15 to 30 grams; appropriate amount for external use.
