Nepeta is the most common Chinese herbal medicine, which has the effects of gout, cold, vomiting, and nausea. Now it is autumn and winter, the weather is dry, the body is prone to getting angry, and the flu is spreading. Many people must have felt that the cold winter is coming soon, and some people have started to catch a cold. Then, what are the medicinal values of Nepeta? What are the functions of it as a common health product?

Pharmacological Action

1. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects

In vitro experiments have shown that the decoction of Nepeta has a strong antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. In addition, it has a certain inhibitory effect on anthrax bacteria, group B streptococci, typhoid bacillus, dysentery bacillus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and human tuberculosis bacillus. Nepeta decoction and the mixed decoction of Nepeta and Saposhnikovia divaricata both have a significant inhibitory effect on mouse ear swelling, and the mixed decoction is more effective than the single decoction. Nepeta has a significant anti-inflammatory effect on inflammation caused by acetic acid.

2. Antipyretic and analgesic effects

Schizonepeta decoction has antipyretic and analgesic effects. When a rabbit was given a fever by mixed typhoid vaccine and given 2g/kg of Schizonepeta decoction or ethanol extract by gavage, it was found to have a weak antipyretic effect. The analgesic effect of Schizonepeta is represented by d-menthone. Gavage of 100mg/kg of d-menthone to mice can inhibit the writhing reaction caused by intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid. Its strength is equivalent to that of aminopyrine.

3. Hemostatic effect

Raw schizonepeta can not significantly shorten the bleeding time, while schizonepeta charcoal shortens the bleeding time by 72.6%; raw schizonepeta shortens the coagulation time by 30%, while schizonepeta charcoal shortens it by 77.7%, that is, schizonepeta has a hemostatic effect after being charred. Some reports point out that both schizonepeta charcoal suspension and schizonepeta charcoal volatile oil emulsion have obvious hemostatic effects, and are dose-related. However, schizonepeta charcoal decoction and schizonepeta charcoal decoction after volatile oil extraction have no obvious hemostatic effect. The reporter believes that when schizonepeta charcoal is used clinically to treat various bleeding diseases, it is best to take the powder orally. There are also reports that the hemostatic effect of schizonepeta charcoal fat-soluble extract is achieved by promoting blood coagulation, anti-fibrinolysis and activating the exogenous coagulation system in the body.

4. Other functions

Experiments show that nepeta oil can lower the body temperature of normal rats and also has a sedative effect. Nepeta oil (0.5 ml/kg) was given to rabbits by gavage, and it was found that their activities were reduced and the muscles of their limbs were slightly relaxed.

Nepeta oil can significantly prolong the incubation period of acetylcholine and histamine mixture inducing asthma in guinea pigs and reduce the number of animals with convulsions; it can also counteract the contraction of guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle caused by acetylcholine or histamine; it also has an expectorant effect.

The decoction of Nepeta tenuifolia has a strong inhibitory effect on isolated rabbit duodenal smooth muscle.

In addition to enhancing immunity, Schizonepeta can also treat common skin diseases such as rubella and urticaria. Because of the main effects of Schizonepeta, it has the function of clearing toxins and dissipating heat. It has a good effect on relieving colds, dizziness, headaches and fever.
