What are the medicinal properties of Chuanmutong?

As soon as you hear the name Chuanmutong, you know that it belongs to the category of traditional Chinese medicine. Because you can tell at a glance that Western medicine is a combination of multiple chemical substances, unlike our country's traditional Chinese medicine, which generally has a single name for each medicinal ingredient. The editor likes traditional Chinese medicine. When I see the names of those traditional Chinese medicines, I especially admire the poetic names given to them by our ancestors. Okay, let me first talk about the medicinal properties of Chuanmutong.

It can relieve fire, promote the flow of water, and unblock blood vessels. It is used to treat red and astringent urine, stranguria, edema, chest heat, sore throat, body cramps, amenorrhea and milk stagnation in women.

1. Effect of water decoction on diuresis in rats Rats weighing 110-178 g were randomly divided into Caulis Atractylodes, saline, and hydrochlorothiazide groups, regardless of gender. After fasting for 15 hours, the mice were injected with 4 ml/100 g of 5% glucose saline solution containing different drugs, including 2 g/100 g of Chuanmutong and 25 mg/100 g of hydrochlorothiazide. The lower abdomen was compressed to empty the remaining urine in the bladder, and then the mice were placed in a metabolic cage to collect urine for 24 hours. The average urination percentage of each group was calculated. The results showed that Chuanmutong had a significant diuretic effect, which was similar to that of hydrochlorothiazide, but there was no significant difference in the diuretic effect between them.

2. Effects of the water-extracted and alcohol-precipitated preparation of C. chuanxiong on the diuretic effect and the excretion of potassium, sodium and chloride ions in urine of anesthetized rabbits. Four healthy rabbits (both male and female) weighing 1.8-2.5 kg were taken and anesthetized with 30% urethane 2.5-3 ml/kg, iv. A 5% glucose saline solution was dripped at a constant rate through the marginal auricular vein. Urine was collected by bladder catheterization, and medication was given after the urine was basically stable. According to the Latin formula design, the plants were divided into four groups: Akebia trifoliata, Akebia tangutica, Akebia chuanxiong and control. Three drugs and distilled water were administered to the same rabbit according to the Latin square design. The dose was 1 g/kg, and the control group was given the same volume of distilled water. The urine volume was recorded 1 hour after administration. The collected urine was centrifuged and the supernatant was taken. The potassium and sodium ion contents were determined by flame photometer, and the chloride ion content was determined by silver titration. While increasing urine volume, Chuanmutong also significantly increases the excretion of potassium, sodium and chloride.
