[Source] The roots, leaves and seeds of the Pittosporum tobira, a plant of the Pittosporum family. The roots and leaves can be harvested throughout the year; the seeds are harvested in autumn and winter.

[Original form] Shrubs or trees, 1 to 6 meters high, completely glabrous. Branchlets nearly whorled. Simple leaves are alternate, often clustered at the ends of branches, thinly leathery, obovate to oblanceolate, 5-10 cm long, 1.7-3.5 cm wide, acuminate at apex, cuneate at base, entire or wavy margin. The inflorescence is terminal and loosely corymbose, with light yellow flowers; the pedicel is about 1 cm long or slightly longer; there are 5 sepals, ovate, about 2.5 mm long; there are 5 petals; the calyx is 8-10 mm long; there are 5 stamens, the anther is 2-chambered, longitudinally fissured; there are 3 carpels, the ovary is superior, densely covered with short hairs, and the stigma is not divided. The capsule is nearly ellipsoidal, about 1.5 cm long, three-lobed, and has a thin pericarp. The seeds are covered with a sticky orange-red aril.

[Habitat distribution] It grows under forests by streams, beside rocks and in mixed woods on hillsides. Distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Henan and other places.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, slightly warm.

【Functions and indications】Detoxification, diuresis, blood circulation and swelling reduction. Treat snake bites, joint pain, weakness, jaundice, carbuncle, furuncle, bruises, fractures, and skin eczema.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5-1 liang; or mash into juice. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① Treating Agkistrodon acutus bites: decoct 1 liang of Agkistrodon acutus root in water and drink or take fresh root or leaves and mash them and apply to the wound.
