[Source] This product is the dried root tuber of Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax ex Pax et Hoffm. of the Caryophyllaceae family . Dig it up in summer when most of the stems and leaves wither, wash it, remove the fibrous roots, blanch it in boiling water, and then dry it in the sun or directly in the sun.

[Properties] This product is in the shape of a slender spindle or slender strip, slightly curved, 3 to 10 cm long and 0.2 to 0.6 cm in diameter. The surface is yellowish white, relatively smooth, with slight longitudinal wrinkles, and traces of root fibers in the depressions. There is a stem scar at the top. It is hard and brittle, with a flat cross section, pale yellowish white, horny; or off-white and powdery. It has a faint smell and a slightly sweet taste.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: The cork layer consists of 2 to 4 rows of square cork cells. The cortex is thin, with only a few rows of thin-walled cells, extending tangentially. Phloem narrow, rays broad. The cambium is ring-shaped. Xylem occupies most of the root, the vessels are sparsely arranged in a radial pattern, and there are 3 to 4 primary xylem. The thin-walled cells are filled with starch granules and calcium oxalate clusters.
