[Other names] Horse urine bubble, sheep urine bubble (Handbook of Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicines in Qinghai), Tang Chuan Ga Bao (Tibetan name).

[Source] It is the seeds and roots of the Solanaceae plant Tangutica . Collect the seeds when the fruit is ripe in autumn and dry them in the sun; dig up the roots in September and October and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 15 to 35 cm high. The roots are thick and fleshy. Stems erect, short-lived, sparsely pubescent or glandular. The leaves are alternate, rosette-shaped near the base, oblong, 6-20 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, obtuse at the apex, entire or notched, covered with sparse soft hairs or glandular hairs on both sides, with more on the edges; the petiole has wings. The inflorescence stalk is axillary, with 1 to 3 yellow flowers; the calyx is cylindrical, about 1 cm long, with 5 short blunt teeth, and rapidly enlarges into an elliptical sac with longitudinal ribs and reticulate veins when fruiting; the corolla is tubular, 2 cm long, hidden in the swollen calyx; there are 5 stamens, hidden inside; the disk is annular, swollen under the ovary; the ovary has 2 chambers, and there are many ovules. The capsule is spherical, vesicular, and ring-cleft. The seeds are dark brown, kidney-shaped and slightly flat.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in high mountains, gravel land, relatively dry grasslands and roadsides. Distributed in Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and other places.

[Chemical composition] The plant contains bioalkaloids such as hyoscyamine.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, pungent, cold, poisonous.

[Functions and indications] "Selected Chinese Herbal Medicines of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Qinghai": "It relieves pain and swelling. It can treat spasmodic pain in the digestive tract, sores, cancer and skin diseases."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 0.5-1 fen. For external use: wash with decoction or apply to the affected area with alcohol.

[Additional prescription] To treat unknown swelling and infection: soak one or two liang of horse urine. Decoction in water and wash the affected area three times a day; or soak in 75% alcohol for several days and apply to the affected area three times a day.
