[Source] It is a volatile oil obtained by distilling the heartwood of the sandalwood plant of the Santalaceae family.

[Preparation method] Cut the heartwood of sandalwood into small pieces and place it in a large distiller. After distillation, 3-5% sandalwood oil can be obtained. This oil should be stored tightly in a bottle to avoid sunlight and air leakage.

[Properties] Pure sandalwood sleeve is a colorless or even light yellow, slightly viscous oil with the inherent aroma of sandalwood. Levorotatory; soluble in 6 times the amount of 70% ethanol at 20°C; specific gravity 0.973~0.985 (25°C), brightness of rotation -15~-20°.

[Pharmacological action] The antibacterial effect of sandalwood oil is not strong, and the phenol coefficient against Salmonella typhi is below 0.1. It can relieve ineffective coughing; overdose can cause irritation to the stomach, kidneys, and skin. Used for urinary difficulties, it can improve symptoms. Feeding rats 0.5 to 2 grams/kg for several days can reduce the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in the urinary tract by 60%. The antibacterial concentration of sandalwood oil is 1:64000~1:128000, and it is also effective against Shigella dysenteriae; the concentration of 1:32000 has an inhibitory effect on avian tuberculosis. It has no effect on E. coli. Sandalwood oil also has a diuretic effect, paralyzes the isolated rabbit small intestine, and has a stimulating effect on the rabbit ear skin.
