[Original morphology] Long-leafed bell grass is a perennial upright or climbing herb with a stem height of up to 3m. The root is carrot-shaped. Usually the whole plant is hairless, hollow, with many long branches that spread out or droop. Leaves are opposite, occasionally in whorls of 3, and have short petioles; leaf blades are ovate, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 6-15cm long, 1-5cm wide, acuminate at the apex, and finely serrated at the margin. Flowers are usually solitary, terminal and axillary; pedicel or peduncle 1-10cm long; pedicel with a pair of filiform bracts in the upper middle part or at the base of the anther; calyx only attached to the lower part of the ovary, lobes usually 5, far apart, filiform or linear, with branched and slender teeth on the margin; corolla white or light red, tubular-bell-shaped, about 1cm long, 5-6-lobed to the middle, lobes ovate-triangular; stamens 5-6, filaments as long as anthers, filaments base wide and lamellar, margins with long hairs; style glabrous or without hair, stigma (4-)5-6-lobed, ovary (4-)5-6-chambered. The berries are spherical (4-)5-6 chambers, purple-black when ripe, and 5-10mm in diameter. Seeds are numerous and polyhedral. Flowering period is from July to October.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; slightly bitter; neutral

【Functions and indications】 Tonifies Qi and replenishes deficiency; stops bleeding by passive stasis; disperses nodules and relieves pain. It is used for cough due to lung fatigue, vomiting blood, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, scrofula, and hernia.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g.
