[Original form] Perennial herb, 30 to 60 cm tall. The stem is erect and unbranched. The leaves are usually arranged in whorls of 3 to 4, ovate or elliptical, 4 to 6 cm long, 2 to 4 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, with 3 to 5 main veins; the petiole is short or nearly sessile. The flowers are small, mostly grown in the axils of scaly leaves at the lower part of the stem, with slender pedicels, erect or obliquely upward; 4 tepals, light green; 4 stamens, the connective is enlarged and protruding with lanceolate appendages; the ovary is ovate and without style. Capsule flat oval. The flowering period is from April to May, and the fruiting period is July.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in hillside thickets or under bamboo forests. The main production areas are Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Zhejiang and Shandong.

[Properties] The tuber is spindle-shaped, slender at the upper end, wrinkled and curved, 5 to 12 cm long and 0.5 to 1 cm in diameter. The surface is yellowish white or light yellowish brown, with irregular deep longitudinal grooves and fine wrinkles. The cross section is flat, light yellowish brown or yellowish white, the cortex is wide, and the central column is flattened. Crisp texture. It has a faint smell and tastes sweet and bitter.
