[Other names] Coral vegetable (Compendium of Materia Medica), mountain calendula (Anhui Tongzhi).

[Source] It is the root of the Apiaceae plant , Saposhnikovia divaricata . Dig up the roots in autumn and winter, wash and dry them.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The root is cylindrical or nearly spindle-shaped, gray-yellow or dark brown. The stem is cylindrical, 30 to 80 cm high, branched and glabrous. Leaves are alternate; basal leaves and leaves on the lower part of the stem are petiolate, and the base is sheath-like and clasping the stem; leaf blades are 2-3-pinnatifida, 1 segment is ovate to lanceolate, and the last segment is lanceolate with notched teeth on the edge; leaves on the upper part of the stem are simple, and the sheaths are narrowly obovate and not swollen. Compound umbel, with 10 to 15 umbels. The umbel stalk is 1 to 2.5 cm long and contains 20 to 30 flowers; the involucre has 1 to 2 pieces or is absent, and the involucre has several pieces, which are filamentous and linear; slightly shorter than or the same length as the pedicel; there are 5 petals, which are white and bent inward at the tip. The double-hanging fruit is ovate-elliptical, 3 to 4 mm long, glabrous, with rib-shaped dorsal ridges and slightly wider lateral ridges. Flowering period: summer and autumn.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on hillsides and forest edges. Distributed in Northeast China, Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places. It is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Hebei and other places.

[Properties] The dry roots are cylindrical or spindle-shaped, and some are branched. The appearance is grayish yellow or dark brown, with annular transverse stripes near the root head, and longitudinal stripes and transverse rows of lenticels below; there are remnants of the stem base at the top. The cross section is off-white with radial wheel layers. Slightly fragrant. The best ones are dry, firm and fragrant.

[Chemical composition] Praeruptoside was isolated from the roots and fruits.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, pungent, cool.

[Functions and indications] Treat cold and cough, bronchitis cough and asthma, and cough during pregnancy.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 3 qian.
