[Source] Medicinal material source: the rhizome and stalk of the Poaceae plant Sweetroot grass.

[Original form] Sweetroot grass is a perennial herb with long rhizomes. The culm is 1-4m high, with long silvery-white hairs on the nodes, white powder below the nodes, and white soft hairs under the inflorescence. The leaf sheath is longer than the internodes, and is glabrous except for the soft hairs at the sheath mouth and base; the ligule is blunt, about 2mm long, with small cilia; the leaf blade can reach 100cm long, 3-6mm wide, and is usually glabrous. The panicle is silvery white, 20-60cm long, with thin and upward branches; the sessile spikelet is 3-4mm long, with white filamentous pubescence at the base 2-3 times the length of the spikelet; the two glumes are equal in length, the glumes are glabrous, the lower part is nearly herbaceous, the upper part is nearly membranous, the first glume is flat with 2 ridges, there are no veins between the ridges, and the second glume is boat-shaped; the first lemma is ovate-oblong, with a pointed apex and ciliated edges, the second lemma is narrow and slightly shorter, with ciliated edges, and the inner palea does not exist. The stalked spikelet is similar to the sessile spikelet, with the stalk being about 3 mm long. Flowering and fruiting season is autumn.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows beside rivers, fields and moist places in the wilderness.

[Chemical composition] Contains 3,5-dimethoxy-p-hydroxy phenylpropane and polysaccharide. Polysaccharide is hydrolyzed to obtain glucose, galactose, xylose, arabinose and galacturonic acid. The leaves also contain isoenzymes of peroxidase.
