[Source] It is the root of Coptis chinensis, a plant of the Poppy family. Harvest in autumn.

[Original form] Perennial herb. Root inverted cone, fleshy. The stem is single or clustered, 15 to 20 cm high. Leaves are alternate, with long basal petioles: leaf blades are leathery, pinnately compound, leaflets are 3-lobed or 3-lobed, the last lobe is obtuse at the tip, or slightly lobed. The inflorescence is terminal. The capsule is linear, membranous, yellow, and split into two lobes when ripe. The seeds are tiny.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on mountain rocks. Distributed in Guizhou.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies, promotes the flow of dampness, relieves pain and stops bleeding.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of conjunctivitis and cataracts: one qian each of Coptis chinensis and Gentiana scabra, and five fen of Prunus mume slices. Grind them into powder, put them in a porcelain cup and steam them thoroughly, then use a lamp wick to dip the medicine into the eyes.
