Catalpa ovata (Ben Jing), also known as: King of Wood (Bi Ya), Sorbus chinensis, River Catalpa ovata, Water tung tree, Thunder wood, Wood horn bean, and Stinky tung tree.

【Habitat distribution】

Grown in low mountain valleys and moist soil mounds. Distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places.

【Properties】

The white bark of the root of Catalpa ovata is in the form of blocks and flakes of varying sizes. It is about 20 to 30 cm long, 2 to 3 cm wide, and 3 to 5 mm thick, and the skin is mostly curled. The outer surface of the cork is brown, wrinkled, with traces of small rootlets falling off, but no obvious lenticels, and the cork is easy to fall off; the inner surface is yellow-white, smooth and delicate, with a fine reticular texture; the cross-section is uneven, with fibers (i.e. cortex and phloem fibers), and is not easy to tear into thin sheets. The best ones are those with large, thick skin and yellow inner color.

【Chemical composition】

The root bark contains isoferulic acid, sitosterol, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The bark contains p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid.

Bitter, cold.

"Changsha Yaojie": "Enters the foot Shaoyang gallbladder and foot Yangming stomach meridians."

【Function and indications】

Clears away heat, detoxifies and kills insects. It is used to treat fever, jaundice, nausea, skin itching, and scabies caused by seasonal diseases.

For internal use: decoct in water. For external use: grind into powder and apply for application or decoct in water for bathing.
