【English name】 Radix Boehmeriae

[Other names] domestic ramie, wild ramie, white ramie, garden ramie, green ramie

[Source] It is Boehmeria nivea (L..) Gaud, a plant of the Urticaceae family. Root . Dig up in winter and spring, wash and dry.

[Original form] Perennial herb or subshrub, 1 to 2 meters high. The root is irregularly cylindrical and slightly curved. The stem is erect, branched, green, with short or long hairs. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate or nearly round, 5 to 16 cm long, 3.5 to 14 cm wide, with a pointed tip, a broad cuneate or rounded base, coarsely serrated edges, rough on the upper side, and densely covered with white wool on the lower side. Flowers are unisexual and monoecious, and the inflorescence is conical; the male inflorescence is below the female inflorescence, with 4 male tepals and 4 male flowers, and with reduced pistils; the female inflorescence is clustered or spherical, the tepals are tubular, 4-toothed, and the ovary has 1 chamber, containing 1 ovule. Achenes are elliptical, hairy, covered with persistent perianth, and topped with persistent stigma, which is filiform. The flowering period is from May to August, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in wasteland, hillsides or under cultivation. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui.

[Properties] The root is irregularly cylindrical, slightly curved, 4 to 30 cm long and 0.4 to 5 cm in diameter. The surface is gray-brown, densely covered with wart-like protrusions and transverse lenticels. The bark of the cut surface is brown and easy to peel off, while the wood is yellowish white. The texture is hard and the cross section is floury. Slight odor, light taste, and sticky.

[Chemical composition] The root contains emodin and emodin methyl ether-8-BETA-glucoside.

【Nature and flavor】Cold in nature, sweet in taste.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, promotes diuresis, stabilizes pregnancy and stops bleeding, and detoxifies. Used for cold and fever, high fever due to measles, urinary tract infection, edema caused by nephritis, abdominal pain in pregnant women, fetal movement disorder, threatened abortion, bruises, fractures, swelling and pain of sores, and hemorrhagic diseases.
