An innovative, interdisciplinary study uses the principle of increasing entropy, a universal law describing the natural progression from order to disorder, as a theoretical basis for assessing how travel affects human health from a sociomaterial perspective.

Travel Therapy: Slowing Down Time

The researchers pointed out that from the perspective of entropy, travel therapy can be used as a groundbreaking health intervention. As an important aspect of the environment, positive travel experiences can help the body maintain a low entropy state by regulating the four major systems of the body.

Travel often exposes people to new environments and relaxing activities, and new environments can stimulate stress responses, increase metabolic rates, and have a positive impact on metabolic activity and the body's ability to self-organize. These situations may also trigger adaptive immune system responses, which improve the body's ability to sense and defend against external threats.

In short, the self-defense system becomes more resilient and hormones that aid in tissue repair and regeneration may be released and boost the function of the self-repair system.

Leisurely travel activities may help relieve chronic stress, inhibit overactivation of the immune system, and promote the normal functioning of the self-defense system. Engaging in recreational activities may release tension and fatigue in muscles and joints, and this relief helps maintain the body's metabolic balance and improves the effectiveness of the anti-wear system. In this way, organs and tissues can remain in a low-entropy state.

Travel includes physical activities such as hiking, mountain climbing, walking, and bicycling. Physical exertion promotes metabolism, energy expenditure, and material transformation, all of which help coordinate self-organizing systems.
