Astronomers used NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to observe an Earth-like exoplanet, Gliese 12b. It is only 40 light-years away from the solar system, orbiting the cool red dwarf star Gliese 12 in Pisces, and is the closest potentially habitable planet to Earth to date.

The discovery of Gliese 12b has sparked great interest among astronomers because it provides an ideal candidate for subsequent detailed analysis.

Further observations revealed that Gliese 12b has a very short orbital period, orbiting its star every 12.8 days. The planet is slightly smaller than Earth and similar in size to Venus.
