The National Space Administration announced today (October 2) that at the 74th International Astronautical Congress, China's Chang'e-5 team won the "Lawrence Team Award", which is the highest team honor of the International Academy of Astronautics.

At this conference, the National Space Administration announced that the Chang'e-5 lunar research samples will be open to international applications, and welcomes scientists from all countries to jointly conduct research and share the results.

The "Lawrence Team Award" was established in 2001. It is one of the two major awards given annually by the International Academy of Astronautics. It aims to recognize aerospace project teams that have made outstanding achievements in the field of aerospace, mainly in the three aspects of technological innovation, scientific discovery, and international cooperation.

Chang'e-5 was China's most complex and technologically advanced aerospace system project at the time. It completed China's first unmanned lunar sampling and return mission, breaking through key technologies such as lunar surface sampling, lunar surface takeoff, lunar orbit rendezvous and docking, sample transfer, and reentry. After a series of interlocking flight processes, it brought back 1,731 grams of lunar samples, completing the world's largest single unmanned lunar sampling mission.

Chang'e-5 lunar sample research achieves many original results

At present, the National Space Administration has completed 6 batches of 258 samples totaling 77.68 grams for Chinese scientists. The distribution of lunar samples has published more than 70 papers in authoritative journals at home and abroad. Through the study of lunar samples, it was determined that the formation time of young basalt was 2.03 billion years, which is 800 million years longer than human previous knowledge.

The activity period of the moon at the site where we landed is different from the research on samples obtained by other countries. Our landing site is relatively young, providing more evidence of lunar activity, which plays an important role in expanding our understanding of the moon.

Through the previously completed three-step mission of the lunar exploration project of "orbiting, landing, and returning", my country has acquired the ability to conduct various technical verifications on the moon, and has also laid the foundation for traveling to more distant planets in the future.
