The growth and development of lotus has regularity and sequence. The order and position of lotus leaves are different. They can be roughly divided into 5 types with different names. Let's learn about them together below. 1. Money Leaf When the top bud of the lotus root sprouts, the first small leaf that comes out is called "money leaf" and floats on the water surface. 2. Floating leaves Then the terminal bud grows into a slender rhizome, called "lotus root whip", with "floating leaves" growing upwards at the nodes and fibrous roots growing downwards. 3. Lifting leaves When the "lotus root whip" grows to a certain length, it will grow thick and large leaves with tall and thick petioles, making the leaves stand out of the water, which are called "standing leaves". The "lotus root whip" continues to grow, and each node can produce fibrous roots and "erect leaves", and flower buds will appear after the "erect leaves". 4. Back leaves After the beginning of autumn, no more flower buds will grow. When the "lotus root whip" begins to thicken and form a new lotus root, the last large upright leaf, the "back leaf", will grow. 5. Termination leaf A small and thick leaf appears in front of the "back leaf", which is called the "terminal leaf". The appearance of this leaf indicates that the petiole no longer sprouts and begins to become a lotus root. Lotus likes moisture and is afraid of dryness. The water depth should be controlled within 1 meter and the water should not submerge the upright leaves. It is suitable for growing in still water or slowly flowing water. The temperature for lotus budding is 8~10℃, the lotus root whip begins to elongate at 14℃, 23~30℃ is the most suitable temperature for growth and development, new lotus roots will grow below 25℃, and most cultivated varieties enter the lotus root growth stage when the temperature drops at the beginning of autumn. |
