It turns out that some months in the Gregorian calendar have 30 days, some have 31 days, and February has only 28-29 days. The lunar calendar also has long and short months, with long months having 30 days and short months having 29 days. This is because the lunar calendar is calculated based on the changes in the waxing and waning of the moon, which is called the "synodic month" in astronomy.

According to the "Compilation and Promulgation of the Lunar Calendar" drafted by the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, "the new moon is the first lunar day of the lunar month", that is, the first day of each lunar month is the new moon. From the "new moon" to the "full moon", and then to the next "new moon", a cycle is about 29.53 days, so the calculated number of days in the lunar month is either 29 days for a short month or 30 days for a long month. This year's twelfth lunar month happens to be a short month, with only 29 days, so there is no New Year's Eve.

In fact, it is not uncommon for the twelfth lunar month to coincide with a short moon, so the chance of not seeing each other on New Year’s Eve is not too low.

After entering 2000, there was no New Year's Eve in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2012, 2013, and 2016. In fact, it is not uncommon for there to be no New Year's Eve, and sometimes it will appear consecutively, such as from 2025 to 2029, there will be no New Year's Eve for five consecutive years.
