[Habitat distribution] It is produced in most parts of the country, mainly in Guangdong, Sichuan and other places.

[Properties] The dried stems are mostly twisted into balls, brown in color, soft and thin, less than 1 mm thick. The leaves degenerate into scales and often fall off. The flowers are clustered at the nodes of the stem and are spherical. The fruit is round or oblate and brownish yellow in color. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste. The best ones are dry, yellow-brown in color and free of impurities.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant of Cuscuta contains amylase and vitamins.

[Pharmacological action] The fresh water-alcohol extract of the whole plant of the same genus Cuscuta reflexa has a relaxant effect on the isolated small intestine of guinea pigs and rabbits; but this effect disappears after 5 days. After 5 days, the alcohol-water extract of the whole plant that has been aged has a choleretic effect (isolated guinea pig and rabbit ileum, frog rectus abdominis, and small intestine and blood pressure of in situ dogs), which can be blocked by atropine; but this effect is different from that of acetylcholine: its spasmogenic effect on the guinea pig and rabbit uterus cannot be blocked by atropine, and it has no effect on the rat uterus.
