Annual herb, 15-120cm tall. The stem is erect, stout, branched, with obvious grooves, glabrous and hollow. The leaves are lanceolate or narrowly elongated, 8-14cm long, 1-2.6cm wide, gradually narrowing at both ends, entire, and petiolate. The flower clusters are axillary, spaced or densely packed on conical spikes. The spikes have leaves and grow at the upper end of each branch. The flowers are bisexual, green in color. The base of the indigo plant has joints. The tepals are long ovate with obvious fine reticulation. Each tepal has a long ovate tubercle-like protrusion on the back, with narrow margins. Most of them have a long thorn in the center of each side, with a straight or curved tip. There are also some without thorns, and their margins are even narrower. Achenes are ovate, triangular, brown and shiny. Enclosed in persistent perianth. Flowering and fruiting period is May to July.
