[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Gentianaceae plant.

[Original form] Annual herb, 3.5-40cm high. Stem solitary, base branched or unbranched. There are 3-5 pairs of basal leaves, with flat petioles up to 6mm long; the leaf blades are spoon-shaped, 0.4-3cm long, 2-9mm wide, rounded at the apex, with papillate margins, and the base is narrowed into a petiole; there are 1-4 pairs of stem leaves, sessile; the leaf blades are oblong or elliptic-lanceolate, 0.5-5.5cm long, 2-14mm wide, obtuse at the apex, with papillate margins, obtuse bases, and free. Flowers are solitary at the top of stems and branches; pedicels are 1.5-20cm long, slightly elongated during fruiting; calyx is tubular, half the length of corolla, with lobes nearly equal in length, narrowly triangular on the outside and ovate on the inside; corolla is blue or yellowish-white at the bottom, blue on the top, lobes are broadly oblong, rounded at the tip, and slightly toothed; glands are nearly spherical and drooping; filaments are linear, anthers are yellow and oblong; ovary is stalked, 2-3.5cm long, and style is 3-4mm long. Capsule with long stalk, oval. Seeds dark brown. Flowering and fruiting period is from July to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on river beaches at an altitude of 1180-4900m. Hillside grassland, under forest, etc.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant contains luteolin, ursolic acid, benzoic acid, succinic acid, 1-hydroxy-3,7,8-trimethoxyxanthone and gentiacaulein. In addition, it also contains reducing sugars, amino acids, and flavonoids. Phenols, organic acids, etc.

[Pharmacological action] The water extract, chloroform extract and granules of wet raw flat buds at concentrations of 0.012g/ml, 0.000 25g/ml, and 0.02g/ml can inhibit the spontaneous contraction of the rabbit duodenum, and can antagonize the tonic contraction of intestinal muscles caused by acetylcholine (Ach), barium chloride (BaCl2) and histamine; oral administration of 30g/kg and 4g/kg or 30g/kg of granules respectively has a significant antidiarrheal effect on castor oil-induced diarrhea in rats. Oral administration of 200g/kg of the water extract did not cause death in mice, and oral administration of 100g/kg of the granules for 3 consecutive days had no obvious toxicity to mice. Oral administration of 5g/kg of the water extract for 7 days had no obvious effect on serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and non-protein nitrogen (NPN) in rabbits.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness; detoxifies. It is used for colds and fevers; hepatitis; cholecystitis; pyelonephritis; red and swollen eyes; diarrhea in children; sores, boils, and swelling.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 5-10g, large dose can be up to 30g; or boil into a paste.

[Clinical application] The preparation of Bianlei Granules includes 2000g wet raw Bianlei, appropriate amount of dextrin and appropriate amount of powdered sugar. Take wet raw flat buds and decoct them twice, combine the decoctions and filter them, decompress the filtrate and concentrate it into an extract, add appropriate amount of dextrin and powdered sugar, mix well, make granules, dry, whole the granules, and package them in 12g per bottle. This product is brown or dark brown granules; it tastes sweet and slightly bitter. The weight of chloroform extract in every 10g of granules shall not be less than 76mg. It has the function of clearing away heat and drying dampness, and is used for diarrhea in children. Oral administration, 0.2-0.3g/kg (body weight) each time, 3-4 times a day, taken with boiled water.
