[Source] Medicinal material source: The roots and stems of Berberis coneflower, a plant of the Berberidaceae family.

[Original form] Berberis coneflower, a semi-evergreen or deciduous shrub, can reach 3m in height. The branches have obvious ridges, young branches are slightly pubescent, old branches are glabrous, brown-yellow in color, with many black warts, and the thorns are three-branched, 8-20mm long, and thin. The leaves are almost sessile, nearly leathery, and clustered in 4-15 pieces; the leaf blades are obovate-oblong to obovate, 8-25mm long, 4-11mm wide, rounded at the apex with a short tip, gradually narrowed at the base, with 3-8 sparsely spiny serrations on the margin above the middle of the leaf, with a tooth spacing of 2-3mm, dark yellow-green above, gray with white ridges below, and prominent reticulate veins on both sides. There are many flowers, densely packed into sessile short panicles, which are erect, 1-2.5 cm long, with 10-30 flowers, light yellow in color, about 6 mm in diameter; sepals are about 3.5 mm long; petals are obovate, with the inner petals slightly concave at the tip and short claws at the base; ovary contains 2 ovules. The berries are oval or spherical, 6-7mm long, and gray-red when ripe. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from July to September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in valley thickets or on the edge of hillside forests at an altitude of 2500m.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness; purges fire and detoxifies. It is used for diarrhea caused by damp-heat; painful and swollen eyes; stranguria caused by heat, leukorrhea; carbuncle, swelling, sore and eczema.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct 9 pieces of water, 6-15g.
