[Original form] Lentil is an annual upright herb, 5-14cm tall. Stems much branched, ridged, glabrous. Simple leaves are alternate; petioles are 0.5-1cm long and slightly winged; leaves are papery, ovate to elliptic or broadly elliptic, 0.8-2.5cm long, 0.6-1.5cm wide, with acute apex, cuneate base and decurrent base, entire margin, green on both sides, sparsely covered with short soft hairs; pinnate veins. Flowers bisexual, racemes terminal, densely packed, extending up to 6cm after anthesis; flowers 1.5-2.5mm long, red or purple-red, with 2 lanceolate bracts, caducous early; 6 sepals, falling off after anthesis, green, 3 outer ones small, 1mm long, ovate to elliptic, 2 inner ones large, petal-like, 2mm long, obovate; 3 petals, lateral petals slightly longer than keel, less than 2/3 attached to filament sheath, keel tip without cockscomb appendage, round, with papillae; 8 stamens, less than 3/4 of filaments connate into sheath, anther ovate, attached at base; ovary oblate, about 0.5mm in diameter, style curved, about 2mm long, trumpet-shaped upward, with sterile inclined lobes, stigma opposite sterile lobes. The capsule is oblate, about 2mm in diameter, winged, sparsely covered with short soft hairs, and with a short sharp tip. The seeds are nearly oblong, about 1mm in diameter, black, covered with white short soft hairs, and have a helmet-shaped caruncle. The flowering period is from August to September, and the fruiting period is from September to November.
