[Source] Medicinal material source: The grains of Setaria viridis, a plant of the Poaceae family.

[Original morphology] Setaria viridis, a perennial herb, growing in clumps, with short noded rhizomes or root heads. The culm is erect or knee-shaped at the base, 30-90 cm high. The leaf sheaths are flattened with ridges, and the old leaf sheaths often have withered fibers near the base, and the back of the sheath has no tail; the ligule is a circle of short cilia; the leaf blades are hard, often rolled into a linear shape, 5-30cm long, 2-5mm wide, glabrous or with long soft hairs near the base on the upper side, gradually pointed at the apex, and slightly rough at the edge. The panicle is densely cylindrical, slightly narrow at the apex, 2-7cm long, about 5mm wide (excluding bristles), with short fine hairs on the main head, rough bristles, 5-12 pieces, 5-10mm long, yellow, brown rust or lavender to purple; spikelets are elliptical, 2-2.5mm long, with pointed apex; the first glume is ovate, 1/3 of the length of the spikelet, with 3 veins, the second glume is broadly ovate, 1/2 of the length of the spikelet, with 5 veins; the first lemma is equal to or slightly shorter than the spikelet, with 5 stamens, usually neutral, and a few have 3 stamens; the second floret is bisexual, the lemma is cartilaginous or leathery, with finer transverse wrinkles, pointed at the apex, narrowly rolled inward on the margins, wrapped in a homogeneous flat palea; the scales are withered, flat at the apex, with many veins; the styles are united at the base. Flowering and fruiting period is from February to November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing on hillsides, wilderness and roadsides below 1500m above sea level.

【Functions and indications】Tonify the middle and replenish qi. Mainly for the five kinds of fatigue and fever; dry blood fatigue in women

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 30-60g.
