[Source] It is Emilia sonchifolia (L.) DC., a plant of the genus Emilia in the Asteraceae family. The whole plant is used as medicine. Harvested in summer and autumn.

[Original form] Annual or perennial herb, 10-70 cm high. The stem is erect, glabrous or sparsely hairy, and sometimes branched. The leaves at the bottom of the stem are 5-10 cm long, usually ovate, lyre-shaped or with obtuse teeth. The leaves at the top are small, usually entire, auriculate at the base, ± amplexicaul, sessile, and the back of the leaves is often purple-red, hence the name red-back leaves. The flowering period is long, blooming from late spring to early winter. The inflorescence is capitulate, 12-14 mm long, with long petioles, and the branches are usually dichotomously branched. The involucre is green, cylindrical, slightly swollen at the base, with bracts in one row, about the same length as the corolla; the flowers are purple, all bisexual tubular flowers, and the corolla has 5 teeth at the tip. Achenes are cylindrical, about 4 mm long, ribbed, with white, soft pappus.

[Habitat distribution] It grows near villages, roadsides, fields or grasslands in the wilderness. The branches are located in Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Guizhou, Yunnan and other provinces.

[Cultivation] It likes warm and humid environment and avoids drought. It is not very demanding on soil and it is better to plant it in loose and slightly fertile land.
