The leaves are nearly rhombic or obliquely ovate, 10-15 cm long and 10-12 cm wide, with pointed apex, oblique cordate base, asymmetrical on both sides, 3-7 shallow lobes on the upper part, triangular lobes, with sharp serrations on the edges, 5-7 palmate main veins, light green above, sparsely covered with short spines, slightly reddish purple below, with reticular fine veins visible. The flower stalk emerges in summer and is almost as long as the petiole, reaching up to 20 cm. The cyme is borne at the apex, with 5-6 flowers, slender pedicels, and ovate-lanceolate bracts at the base. The flowers are unisexual and monoecious; the male flowers have 4 tepals, 2 inside and 2 outside, the outer tepals are ovate, the inner tepals are oblong, and the stamens are 10-25, free; the female flowers have 3 tepals, 2 outside and 1 inside, the outer tepals are broadly ovate, the inner tepals are ovate to oblong, and light red; the ovary is fusiform, 3-ribbed, 3-chambered, each chamber with many ovules, and 3 styles, free. [Habitat distribution] Grown by streams or on shady and damp rocks. Distributed in Sichuan.

[Chemical composition] The rhizomes show cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, sterols, triterpenes and saponin reactions.

[Preparation] Wash, slice, dry and set aside.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet, bitter, neutral.

【Functions and indications】 Tonifies Qi and strengthens the spleen, nourishes blood and stops bleeding. Weakness after illness, coughing and hemoptysis, functional uterine bleeding, and leucorrhea.

【Usage and Dosage】 0.5-1 liang.
