[Original form] Perennial herb, 50 to 99 cm tall. The stem is erect, and the stem, leaves and bracts are covered with fine short soft hairs. Leaves are opposite; obovate-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 2.5-6 cm long, 8-20 mm wide, with short pointed tips, narrow petioles at bases, and serrated edges. The flowers are densely distributed at the ends of branches, arranged in spike-shaped racemes, blue-purple; bracts are narrowly linear-lanceolate to linear; pedicels are 1 to 3 mm long, with short soft hairs; calyx is 4-lobed, the lobes are oval or cuneate, slightly hairy; corolla is radiate, the tube is short, with 4 lobes; stamens are 2, prominent; ovary is superior, 2-chambered, and the style is very long. Usually the fruit tip remains after the flowers fall, and the stigma is capitate. The capsule is oblate. Flowering period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in mountain grass. Distributed throughout East China.

【Chemical composition】 The whole plant contains mannitol and flavonoids. The aglycone of the flavonoid glycoside is 6-hydroxyluteolin.

【Functions and indications】 Antitussive, expectorant and antiasthmatic. Treat chronic tracheitis.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 3 qian.

【Clinical Application】 Treatment of chronic tracheitis: Based on the observation of 662 cases, the total effective rate was 84.6%, and the markedly effective rate was 32.9%. Preparation and usage: 1. Decoction: 3 qian of the whole herb of Rhizoma Cibotii (dried), add water and boil until the mixture becomes 60 ml, take 30 ml each time, twice a day. ㈡Compound decoction: 3 qian each of Yizhixiang, Sijiqing and Foerstercao, boiled into 60 ml, take 30 ml each time, twice a day. ㈢Mannitol tablets: made from active ingredients extracted from crude drugs. Each tablet contains 200 mg, take 6 tablets each time, 3 times a day. One course of treatment is 7 to 10 days. It has been observed in practice that Yizhixiang has antitussive, expectorant and antiasthmatic effects. About one-third of the cases begin to show therapeutic effects three days after taking the medicine, among which mannitol tablets have a more significant effect. After taking the medicine for 1 to 2 days, patients generally feel dry mouth. A very small number of patients have chest tightness and abdominal pain, but they are very mild and do not require treatment and will disappear on their own. Long-term use does not cause obvious damage to heart, liver, and kidney functions. The efficacy of this drug for the wheezing type seems to be higher than that for the simple type.
