[Source] It is the root and stem of the hairy-leaved ringwort of the Menispermaceae family. Available all year round.

[Original form] Twining herbaceous vine. The roots are like chicken intestines and are brown-black. The stem is slender with longitudinal stripes, and the young branches are hairy. The leaves are peltate, triangular-broad-ovate, 4-10 cm long, 2.5-8 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, slightly emarginate or nearly truncated at the base, usually entire, pubescent on both sides, with dense, long and expanded marginal hairs, and 9-10 palmate veins; the petiole is 1-4 cm long and pubescent. The male inflorescence is erect, with dense cymes arranged in a panicle, axillary, with 1 to 2 branches, and covered with long soft hairs. The male calyx tube is cup-shaped, covered with long stiff hairs below, and the calyx rim is 4-lobed, with lobes broadly triangular; the corolla tube is shallowly cup-shaped; the polystaminal stamens are slightly protruding; the female inflorescence is drooping, with dense cymes arranged in a raceme, the female flower has 2 sepals, which are nearly round and densely covered with stiff hairs below; there are 2 petals, which are horizontally oblong and glabrous; the ovary is densely covered with stiff hairs, and the stigma lobes are sharp. The drupe is initially covered with stiff hairs, becoming nearly hairless when mature, and the bony endocarp has two rows of small wart-like protrusions on each side of the back. Flowering and fruiting period is autumn and winter.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in moist mountains, near villages, and in bushes on hills. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi and other places.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant contains tetrandrine, with 2.81% in the roots, 0.11% in the stems, 0.09% in the leaves, and a small amount of granular alkaloids. The rhizome contains fangji alkaloids and amorine.
