【English name】RADIX STELLARIAE

[Source] This product is the dried root of Stellaria dichotoma L. var.lanceolata Bge., a plant of the genus Stellaria in the Caryophyllaceae family. The plants are dug up in spring and summer or when the stems and leaves wither in autumn; the cultivated products are dug up in mid-September of the third year or mid-April of the fourth year after planting, and the residual stems, fibrous roots and mud are removed, and the plants are dried in the sun.

[Properties] This product is cylindrical, occasionally branched, 15 to 40 cm long and 0.5 to 2.5 cm in diameter. The surface is light brown or light brown, with twisted longitudinal wrinkles and root marks, and many hole-like or disc-shaped depressions, commonly known as "sand eyes". If you break it from the sand eyes, fine sand can be seen leaking out of the brown cracks. The root head is slightly swollen, with dense, warty protrusions of bud buds, stems or rhizomes, commonly known as "pearl plates". It is hard and brittle, easy to break, with an uneven cross-section, loose and cracked. The bark is very thin and the wood has radial textures of alternating yellow and white. It has a slight smell and a sweet taste.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: Cork cells are arranged in several to more than ten rows. The cortex is narrow. Phloem sieve tube groups are obvious. The cambium is ring-shaped. The xylem is well developed. Rays are up to 10 rows of cells wide. The thin-walled cells contain calcium oxalate sand crystals, which are more common in the ray cells.
