【English Name】 Rhizoma Cimicifugae Dahuricae

[Other names] Northern Cohosh, Gazella gracilis

[Source] It is the rhizome of Cimicifuga dahurica (Turcz.) Maxim., a plant of the Ranunculaceae family .

[Original form] Perennial herb. The stem is 1m tall and densely pubescent. The lower stem leaves are bi-ternate compound leaves with long petioles; each leaflet has a distinct petiole, the terminal leaflet is broadly rhombic, 5-10cm, 3.5-9cm wide, 3 deeply lobed, the lateral leaflets are sessile or have very short petioles; the margins are heavily serrated, and both sides are pubescent. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious, arranged in panicles; the reduced stamens are deeply 2-lobed; the ovary is covered with gray hairs. The flowering period is from July to August, and the fruiting period is September.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in forest edge thickets, sparse forests on hillsides or grasslands. It is mainly produced in Heilongjiang, Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia.

[Properties] The rhizome is similar to that of Cimicifuga foetida, but has more branches, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, and a denser stem base; the cross section is slightly green. The taste is slightly bitter.

[Chemical composition] Contains β-sitosterol, cimigemol, cimigenoside, dahurinol, isodahurinol, dehydroxydahurinol, 25-0-methylisodahurinol, isoferulic acid, visnagin, visamminol, norvisnagin, etc.
