[Source] The tender stems and leaves of the legume plant Vetch . Harvest the tender stems and leaves on the upper part of the plant between July and September and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The stem is climbing, quadrangular, 0.5 to 1 meter high, and all parts of the plant are more or less covered with sparse soft hairs. Stipules are semi-arrow-shaped or semi-halberd-shaped, with a larger tooth in the middle, rarely with several irregular teeth; even-pinnate compound leaves, 4-6 pairs of leaflets, with divergent tendrils at the end of the rachis; leaflets are elliptic or oblong-elliptic, 15-35 mm long, 6-12 mm wide, obtuse at the apex, or slightly emarginate, with a fine tip, rounded base, entire, membranous to leathery, usually less hairy above, and obviously grayish white below. Racemes are axillary; pedicels are nearly as long as calyx; flowers are red-purple, blue, or bluish-purple; calyx is short-tubular to bell-shaped, hairy, upper sepals are triangular, significantly shorter than lower sepals, lower sepals are lanceolate or triangular-conical; standard petal is obovate, apex emarginate, or rounded; wing petals are slightly longer than keel, nearly as long as standard petal; keel tip is slightly narrow and nearly triangular. Pods, oblong rhombus. Seeds nearly spherical. Flowering period is from July to September. The fruiting period is from August to September.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in grasslands, hillsides, roadsides, and bushes. Distributed in Northeast China, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Henan, Shandong and other places. Produced in Northeast China.

[Properties] The dry stem is quadrangular; it is brittle and easy to break. The leaves are even-pinnate compound leaves, mostly curled and wrinkled, with tendrils at the tip of the rachis. The remaining florets are blue or purple; there are occasional pods, which are brown or dark brown and contain black seeds. Slight odor, light taste.

【Functions and indications】Relieve rheumatism, promote blood circulation, relax muscles and relieve pain. Treat rheumatic pain, sprains and bruises, unknown swellings and scrotal eczema.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 2-5 qian (1-1.5 liang for fresh ones). For external use: decoct in water for fumigation or grind into powder for application.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat rheumatic pain: Take appropriate amount of wild pea and calamus, decoct them in water and use for fumigation and washing.

[Remarks] The whole herb of this product and plants of the same genus, namely, Vicia fragrans and Vicia scabra, are used as Radix Penicillae in most parts of Northeast China.
