[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of Shaanxi ear fern, a plant of the Dryopteris family.

【Original morphology】 Plant height 20-40cm. The rhizome is short, erect or ascending, and the base of the petiole is covered with brown, lanceolate scales, with an entire margin. Leaves are clustered; petioles are 5-7m long, dark straw color, covered with broad ovate and lanceolate scales upwards; leaf blades are herbaceous, linear-lanceolate, 20-30m long, 2-3m wide, gradually narrowing at the base, the lowest pair shrinking into an ear shape, covered with fibrous scales along the rachis, pinnae and veins, and deeply pinnate-lobed twice; pinnae are 28-32 pairs, alternate, 1-1.5m apart, gradually shortening below the middle, and deeply pinnate-lobed; lobes are 3-5 pairs, oblong to triangular, the base pair is usually larger, short-awned at the apex, with sparse fine teeth on the margin, and the base is connected to the narrow wings on both sides of the rachis; leaf veins are pinnate, and the lateral veins are often single, extending to the tooth tips. The sori are round, dorsally borne at the tip of the veinlets, with 1-2 pairs of sori; the sori cap is brown with eroded edges.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on relatively dry rocks at an altitude of 2600-3200m.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; astringent; cool; slightly toxic

【Functions and indications】 Clearing away heat and detoxifying; cooling blood and stopping bleeding; expelling parasites; preventing influenza, Japanese encephalitis, measles, and mumps. Mainly used for dysentery, hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, pinworm, hookworm, red worm and other intestinal parasitic diseases

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount, mash and apply or grind into powder for application.
