[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the Lamiaceae plant Salvia glutinosa.

[Original form] Foxglove sage, perennial, 30-60cm. The stem is erect and densely covered with long soft hairs. Leaves are opposite; basal leaves have petioles 6-8cm long, and cauline leaves have short petioles or are sessile; leaf blades are oblong, 3.5-11cm long, 2-5cm wide, obtuse or rounded at the apex, rounded at the base, with crenate edges, green above, sparsely pubescent, and densely covered with white short hairs below. Inflorescence is in a whorl of 4-6 flowers per office whorl, forming a terminal raceme in 3-8 whorls; bracts are obovate and pubescent; pedicels are 3-4mm long; calyx is bell-shaped, two-lipped, with the lower lip slightly larger than the upper lip; corolla is yellow with lavender spots, the corolla tube extends out of the calyx, the corolla brim is two-lipped, the upper lip is oblong, the lower lip is larger, and the middle lobe is obcordate; developed stamens extend out of the corolla, and the filaments are flat; style is long, the lower lip is larger, and the middle lobe is obcordate; developed stamens extend out of the corolla, and the filaments are flat; style is long, far beyond the corolla, and the tip is unequally lobed; ovary lobes are oval. The nutlets are gray-black, obovate, ribbed on the ventral surface, and smooth. Flowering period is from April to June.

[Properties] Identification of properties: the root is conical, 5-25cm long, 1-3cm in diameter, and has a red surface. The texture is loose and crispy. Slight smell, slightly bitter taste.

【Chemical composition】 The root contains tanshinone Ⅰ, ⅡA, and methylene tanshiquinone. It also contains baiyunoside, shanzhiside methyl ester, 8-O-acetyl shanzhiside methyl ester 8-O-acetate, and 6-O-syringyl-8-O-acetyl shanzhiside methyl ester.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; bitter; neutral

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis; promote dampness and detoxify. It is mainly used for chest pain, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, vaginal bleeding, leucorrhea, malignant sores and swellings.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 6-15g.
