[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the Polygonum thomsonii plant.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The stem is erect, 80-120cm high. Basal leaves are short circular-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, 20-30cm long, 4-7cm wide, with obtuse or pointed apex, circular or broadly cuneate base, rarely nearly cordate; stipule sheaths are tubular, membranous, 2-4cm long. Inflorescence is large, terminal or axillary; flowers are bisexual, pedicels are thin and weak, with joints in the middle and lower parts; 6 tepals are arranged in 2 whorls, the inner tepals enlarge when fruiting, broadly ovate, membranous, 4.5-6mm long, 4-5mm wide, pointed at the apex, cordate at the base, entire, with some or all of them tubercle-like protrusions; 6 stamens; 3 stigmas, brush-shaped. Achenes are ovate, with 3 edges, about 3 mm long, brown and shiny.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing beside fields and roadsides at an altitude of 3600-4000m.

[Properties] Identification: Conical or cylindrical, 7-11cm long and 3cm in diameter. There are remnants of the stem base at the top of the root head, and brown-black dot-like protruding root fibrous marks can be seen around it, arranged in a ring shape. The root surface is yellow-gray with longitudinal wrinkles and scattered rootlet marks. It is tough, difficult to break, and has a fibrous cross section. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste.

[Chemical composition] The roots and rhizomes of Tibetan sorrel contain nepodin and free and bound anthraquinones composed of emodin, physcion and chrysophanol, of which the bound type accounts for 0.80%, the free type accounts for 0.24%, and the total anthraquinone is 1.04%.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and promotes bowel movements; cools blood and stops bleeding; kills insects and relieves itching. It is used for constipation due to heat accumulation, hematemesis, epistaxis, blood in stool, and scabies.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and wash with decoction.
