[Original form] Black-level chimaera, the body is flattened and elongated laterally, and becomes thinner towards the back. The larger ones can reach 1.2m in length. The head is thick and laterally flattened. The male has a stalk-shaped frontal fin in front of the eye, which can be erected or drooped, and has a group of small spines in front. The snout is soft, high and blunt, and its length is 1/2 of the head length. The nostrils are round and located in front of the mouth, the anterior nasal valves are fused and extend to the dental plate, the posterior nasal valves are wide and flat, extend to the corners of the mouth, and have a naso-oral groove. The mouth is large, with several transverse fissures, and the teeth are divided into dental plates. The upper jaw has a beak-shaped front dental plate and two lateral dental plates; the lower jaw has one pair of lateral dental plates. There is 1 external gill opening. There are 2 dorsal soles; the starting point of the first dorsal fin is opposite to the gill opening, with a long and flat spine, and the second dorsal fin is elongated and flat, with a notch separating it from the upper lobe of the tail fin. The anal fin is very low and flat, with a pointed posterior end, and is separated from the lower lobe of the caudal fin by a gap. The pectoral fins are broad, with a slightly rounded front edge, and the rear edge and inner edge connected to form a broad circle.
