Vinegar turtle shell is sweet in taste and cold in nature. It enters the liver, kidney, and heart meridians. It is often used for symptoms of kidney qi deficiency, hyperactivity of liver yang, depletion of true yin, internal movement of virtual wind, and spleen deficiency and dampness.

Vinegar tortoise shell is mainly composed of stratum corneum and bone hyperplasia and other soil organic matter, usually with black spots on a white background or brown-black spots on a yellow background. The spots are mostly brown, yellow, yellowish brown and gray-black. Its method is: take clean tortoise shell, fry it with gravel according to the scalding method (Appendix Ⅱ D) until the surface is light yellow, remove it, quench it with vinegar, and dry it. Mash it before use. For every 100kg of tortoise shell, use 25kg of vinegar.

In clinical medicine, patients with kidney yin deficiency may have manifestations of oxidative phosphorylation excitement. In rats with "hyperthyroidism and Yin deficiency" induced by injection of T3, it can be seen that the erythrocyte cytoplasmic Na, K-ATPase activity increased significantly, blood sugar level decreased, drinking water increased, urination decreased, and body weight decreased, indicating that the body cell air oxidation process was accelerated, the melting point increased, the metabolic rate increased, and the protein absorption metabolism was accelerated. Administration of tortoise shell decoction can significantly inhibit the above changes and restore them to normal or near normal.

Vinegar turtle shell is also used in diet therapy, such as: Turtle and Turtle Qingxuan Decoction, vinegar turtle shell, turtle shell 15g each, raw rehmannia, oyster each 30g, Huai Niuxi, yellow chrysanthemum each 10g. Boil the turtle, tortoise shell and oyster in water first, then add the other ingredients and boil them together to make a soup to drink. Our prescription uses tortoise and turtle shells to nourish yin and suppress yang, oyster shells to help dioscorea regulate excessive qi and blood, Huai Niuxi to nourish deficiency and lead blood heat downward, and yellow chrysanthemum to clear liver heat. Used for Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity, headache, dizziness, or hypertension.
