[Source] Medicinal material source: the roots and rhizomes of Altai Veratrum, a plant of the Liliaceae family.

[Original form] Altai Veratrum is a perennial herb, about 1m tall. The lower leaf sheath is 2-3cm in diameter, with non-mesh fiber bundles at the base. The leaves at the bottom of the stem are larger, broadly ovate-elliptical, about 20 cm long and 10-16 cm wide, with obtuse or acuminate tips and densely pubescent on the back. The panicle is about 30 cm long, with many nearly equal lateral racemes, each lateral inflorescence often branched again, and the inflorescence axis is densely covered with gray soft hairs; the flowers are densely grown, yellow-green; the tepals are narrowly elliptic, 11-12 mm long, 4-4.5 mm wide; the pedicels are shorter than the bracteoles, 1-2 mm long; there are 6 stamens, about 1/2-3/5 of the length of the tepals; the ovary is longer than wide, glabrous. The capsule is 2-2.5cm long and about 1cm wide. Flowering and fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in the shade and moist places under mountain forests at an altitude of 1500-2000m, often in clusters.

【Nature and flavor】 Pungent; bitter; slightly warm; toxic

【Functions and indications】Analgesic; insecticide; emetic. It is used to treat rheumatic pain, traumatic injury, scabies, malignant sores, mania and phlegm congestion.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: grind into powder, 0.3-0.6g. For external use: grind appropriate amount into powder and apply with water; or decoct in water for fumigation and washing.
